(Los Angeles, CA) — As the semester comes to an end for the first wave of students taking advantage of free community college in California, legislators and higher education leaders stood together earlier today at Los Angeles Trade Technical College to debut Assembly Bill 2 -- a measure to waive fees for Year Two. By doing so, an Associates Degree in California will effectively become free.
LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LA Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner recently sent out a joint letter to all high school seniors that they are guaranteed enrollment at any of LACCD's nine colleges and they are eligible to participate in the L.A. College Promise Program for free first-year tuition.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom took his first step toward guaranteeing free community college in California last week, marking early progress on one of his top campaign promises.
Newsom proposed spending $40 million during the next fiscal year to extend the California College Promise program to a second year of free community college for eligible students. Gov. Jerry Brown signed the program into law in 2017, creating one free year of tuition for students who meet certain criteria.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A California assembly member introduced legislation Tuesday that would provide two years of free community college for students.
Assembly Member Miguel Santiago, who represents District 53 in Los Angeles, introduced AB 2. The legislation, which Santiago authored, would waive fees for two years of community college.

Los Angeles College Promise has been helping to reduce financial barriers that many Latino students face attending college. It has served as an example for the state this year to create the California Community Promise program, which will provide one year of free tuition to all first-time, full-time community college students in California.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke to about 150 Pierce College students who are among the first recipients of free college enrollment under the Los Angeles College Promise program. The program was created to increase the number of community college graduates, university transfer and workforce-ready students throughout the region.
